Your teenager is not who they used to be. You are not sure if it is “normal" teenage stuff or if it is something more. All you know is when you pick them up from school, they answer with one word. When they get home, they go straight to their room. They tell you everything is fine, even though you know it’s not. They don’t tell you what’s happening, no matter how much you try to connect with them. Your child used to be a high achiever, maybe they were in gifted or advanced classes, but they get so nervous now going to school that they don’t enjoy it anymore. You know they have enormous potential, how smart and talented they are. But they aren't excelling anymore. Every time the phone rings and your child wants to be picked up from school, your heart breaks. They are not the kid they used to be and you don’t know how to help.
When your child is hurting, you are too. It’s not easy knowing how to best support your teen, and growing up today is so different than when you were their age. Anxiety among teenagers is normal and it can often look like depression or teenage angst.
Over the past ten years, I have worked with many teens going through this and helped support their parents. In therapy, your child can become more confident, secure in themselves, learn to have better boundaries, improve their grades, improve their self-esteem, have fewer panic attacks, and become an empowered best version of themselves.
